A shocking entrance

Dec. 15th 2010, I’m 25 weeks pregnant and everything has been normal. I’m at work about to open and use the restroom. There’s blood and I’m panicking. Call my boss and drive to the hospital. I can barely speak to the people in the ER, they rush me back and within 20 minutes, I’ve had an emergency c-section and now have a 1lb 13 oz baby boy. I didn’t know if they could save him at all.

I delivered my son at Dublin Methodist but their NSCU wasn’t equipped for a baby his size; he was sent to Riverside that same day. 10 days in and his abdomen is black, he has NEC and is rushed to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the middle of the night Christmas day for emergency surgery. Our life for the next 3 months was spent at Nationwide Children’s.  Our son now had an ileostomy, BPD and had 7 chest tubes to help with breathing. Towards the end of our stay he had his ileostomy repaired and laser surgery for R.O.P. I was so scared to take him home without the machines and alarms telling me he was okay, I don’t think I slept for a week and he was right next to us in his bassinet.

Today he is a crazy 7 year old, you wouldn’t know by looking at him that his entrance to this world was so hard and scary unless you saw his scars, which he proudly displays to anyone that will listen. We are so lucky that we live here in Columbus with such a wonderful hospital that was able to keep our son alive with a normal quality of life despite the challenges he faced!
