Decko the Competitor

Decko was born at 33 weeks and spent time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). He was then diagnosed with necrotizing entercolitis (NEC), which is a disease of the intestine of newborn infants. Decko has been through a lot but that hasn’t stopped him from being a happy kid! He’s probably spent more time in the hospital than at home with his family. Despite the rough times he has had, he is very strong, positive and brave. He’s a fighter! He says “STUBBORN” is his middle name and that no matter the challenges life puts him through, he is always going to overcome them.

This past year Decko has been suffering from reoccurring infections, and has spent much of 2020 inpatient at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. It’s been challenging for him, especially now with all the COVID-19 restrictions. Decko hasn’t been able to see his siblings for a little over 6 months but the Columbus Crew and staff at Nationwide Children’s have been doing everything they can to lift his spirits. He was presented with a Crew SC jersey and was recently surprised with the opportunity to FaceTime two of his favorite Crew SC players, Gyasi Zardes and Sebastian Berhalter.

He looks forward to cheering on the Columbus Crew this weekend and hopefully bringing home another victory!
