Gabriel’s Heart Story

There are so many emotions that come to mind when we recall our time at Nationwide during our son’s first few months of life. It was an amazing place with wonderful and caring people!

We knew Gabe would be born with a heart defect that would require surgery at birth. We had great hospitals in our area, but none that would be able to honor our wishes to keep the surgery blood transfusion free. We started doing research and found out about the amazing work that Dr. Galantowicz and his team at Nationwide were doing with pediatric cardiology and surgery with limited use of blood. We contacted him and before we knew it we were headed to Columbus!

We were in the hospital for a while waiting for Gabe to be strong enough to go into surgery to correct his TGA. There were many nights that we were startled awake by the nurses doing everything they could to keep him stable…we were scared and didn’t know what would happen next! Thank goodness for the awesome nurses, the team of doctors, and Dr. G himself because they calmed our fears and helped us to make it through so many crazy days and nights. Gabriel finally had his surgery and pulled through, he is doing great now and we owe a debt of gratitude to Nationwide for their hard work and loving attitude. We plan to visit again one day to show Gabe the awesome hospital he was in at the beginning of his life!
