Mighty Mason

In January of 2014, Mason (3), was recovering from the stomach flu. It wasn’t until our efforts to treat dehydration symptoms were unsuccessful that we became concerned. A trip to his pediatrician lead to an EEG which landed us in the Neurology department at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. At this time, Mason was diagnosed with Partial Complex Epilepsy. He was prescribed medication, however, his seizure activity worsened. In April of the same year, Mason had his first MRI. The following evening, our phone rang and we were delivered the news that our son had a DNET Brain Tumor. Thankfully, Mason’s neurologist (Dr. Weisleder) had already set the appointment for the following morning with his Neurosurgeon, Dr. Leonard. We met with Dr. Leonard and he set the date for a tumor resection. 26 days before his 4th birthday, Mason was admitted into Nationwide Children’s Hospital and underwent a 7 1/2 hour surgery to remove the golf ball-size brain tumor. Almost 2 years post resection, Mason has adjusted to his frequent trips to see our heros, Dr. Batman (Dr. Leonard) and Dr. Hulk (Dr. Weisleder). We have found comfort in our favorite nurse who works in MRI, Trisha and the support and understanding of those who have patiently comforted Mason and our family.

Mason has seemingly won the battle against his tumor. He is currently in PreK and is looking forward to starting Kindergarten in the Fall.
