My Journey with Heart Disease

My story began when I was born with Aortic Stenosis. I was also born without the leaflets in my valve which caused a tear in my aoritic valve and then in my heart. I was transferred to Children’s in Columbus, Ohio when I was 17 hours old. I had my first open heart surgery when I was 3 days old. Dr. Davis put a slit across my valve so that the blood could circulate they way it should. I had my second open heart surgery at 8 months old where he performed a valvotomy. When I was 3 years old Dr. Davis replaced my Aoritic valve for the first time and put in a small adult sized mechanical valve. I had that valve for 11 years and did great with it. At 14 I had outgrown the valve and at that time Dr. Galantowicz replaced my mechanical valve for a bovine cow tissue valve. I was able to live life with no limitations. At 21 I had my first baby, a little boy that I was able to carry all the way to 40 weeks. I had my son in January of 2013, and I had my 5th open heart surgery in November of 2013. Dr. Galantowicz put in a mechanical valve that I currently have. I went home two days after surgery. I am now 25 years old and 15 weeks pregnant with my second baby that we just found out is a baby girl! I can’t thank the team at Nationwide Children’s Hospital enough. I have been lucky enough to have amazing doctors and nurses throughout my life; Dr. Franklin was my first cardiologist, and then I had Dr. Craenan, then Dr. Wheller, and finally Dr. Roble. Them plus so many more have helped me have a full and wonderful life. It hasnt always been easy living with a heart condition; anxiety can be worse, having to constantly draw your blood to check you PT, or taking medications everyday… But it has made me stronger, and the fact that I get to have a beautiful family and watch my children grow, it is worth every second. So thank you to the staff at Children’s Hospital I appreciate everything you have done for me.
