Peter’s Story

Peter was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate and was living in an orphanage in China when Lisa and Greg Burleson adopted him and took him home to Dallas, Texas. Peter underwent a couple surgeries elsewhere until his family found Dr. Richard Kirschner who performed another surgery on Peter when Dr. Kirschner was practicing in Pennsylvania. Peter has remained under Dr. Kirschner’s care ever since –  following him when he moved his practice to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Children with cleft lip and palate can have many needs including plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, otolaryngology (ENT), speech – language pathology, nursing, social work, audiology, genetics, psychology nutrition, and more.  Under Dr. Richard E. Kirschner’s direction, the Cleft Lip and Palate Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital offers comprehensive care from a multi-disciplinary team of nationally recognized clinicians who fulfill these needs.

Today, Peter enjoys spending time with his siblings. Four-year-old Lan became his sister when the Burlesons’ adopted her from the same orphanage in China where they adopted Peter from. Peter’s brother, Alex, was adopted from Russia. Peter loves history and is a big fan of U.S. Presidents and is happily working on his goal of visiting all of the presidential libraries.
