Zaine Strong

You don’t ever know how you are until being strong is your only option. My son proved his strength the day he became a victim of child abuse.

On August 17, 2016 Zaine, who was only 10 months old, was abused by someone I thought I could trust. I left for only about an hour to run some errands. I was on my way home when I got a phone call from the person watching Zaine saying that I needed to get home because something was wrong with Zaine’s arm. I arrived home to my worst nightmare. My son had bruises on his face, and he had a burn on his left shoulder. I took him to a hospital near our house, and that’s when they confirmed what I thought. He had been abused and needed to go to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

We went to Nationwide Children’s and that’s when he was admitted to the Burn Unit for the next month. Zaine had a third-degree burn which needed skin graft and lots of follow-up care. Zaine has always smiled through everything. Even when he is scared, he smiles. He is the one going through the pain but if he were to see you looking upset, he would smile at you or try to make you laugh. He would hide his own pain to make you feel better.

The follow-up care has been amazing through the Burn Clinic. Zaine always loves going to see his ‘”boo-boo” doctor. Zaine calls Dr. Thakkar his “toy doctor” because he always gets a toy at the outpatient surgery center. Dr. Thakkar tells Zaine that he is his favorite patient. I know Zaine trusts the team now because he doesn’t let anyone else see his scar: he is scared to be made fun of, when they ask to see it, he has no issues with allowing them to look.

Zaine always is excited to tell Dr. Thakkar something new; just at our last visit Zaine was so excited to tell him about how he was going to kindergarten in the fall. Dr. Thakkar and the whole team always make sure that I am 100 percent comfortable with the treatment plan. If I am uneasy, they explain it to me a little better, or we take a different approach. It has been almost 5 years. We have come such a long way already, but I know that we have more of a journey. I know that Zaine is in amazing hands.

Zaine is 5 years old now. He loves Minecraft and Roblox. He loves to boss around his brothers (and they let him do it). Zaine is such a Mama’s boy; he loves to cuddle and give kisses. He just graduated preschool and is so excited for kindergarten in the fall. He has the most forgiving soul for what he has been through. He came to me not to long ago and said “Mommy, I forgive the person who hurt me. I don’t want to be mad at him anymore. My Boo-Boos don’t hurt anymore.”

If we could all be like Zaine, the world would be a better place.
