His family calls him a Rock Star. The bestowment of this title would be impressive in any situation, but even more so when you consider Jude’s circumstances.

When Jude was only 3-½  years old, he became quite ill. He frequented the Emergency Room at Nationwide Children’s Hospital on several occasions. It was on one of these occurrences, on Mother’s Day in 2012, when, following multiple tests, the family was informed that the reason Jude was so ill was because his adrenal glands were not functioning. Jude was diagnosed with Addison’s Disease. This can be life-threatening if not properly managed, and Jude would require daily medications for the rest of his life.

But Addison’s Disease was not Jude’s only problem.

Further testing revealed that Jude also has Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare genetic disorder that affects the brain, spinal cord, and adrenal glands. Because Jude’s adrenal glands were already affected by his Addison’s Disease, he will need particularly close monitoring by a team of doctors in both the Neurology and Endocrinology Departments and will require brain MRI’s every 6 months to track any progression of the disease.

The Division of Child Neurology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is recognized as a leader in pediatric neurological disorders offering comprehensive, family-centered care. The Endocrinology Section at Nationwide Children’s Hospital has a multidisciplinary team that works together to care for patients and families affected by adrenal disorders, calcium and bone disorders, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, puberty and sexual development disorders, growth disorders, pituitary disorders and more. And our clinician scientists are committed to improving care for children through our clinical-based research studies.

Rock Star Jude is an avid sports fan and athlete. He plays soccer, football, baseball, and basketball. He is a big Buckeye and Thunder fan and also loves Kevin Durant. Jude spends many evenings cheering on his big brother, Dylan, who plays high school football and basketball. And he has been honing in on his math skills by helping his mom keep the books for his sister’s basketball games. So Jude is also a Math Star.

No doubt Jude will be wearing both his Math Star and his Rock Star hats at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon as he counts the runners who pass through his mile while cheering them on in true Rock Star fashion!
