Allie’s Story

In the months leading up to Allie starting kindergarten, she was experiencing snoring, loud breathing and interrupted sleep through the night. So, her parents, Lyndsey and Brian, decided to meet with the Nationwide Children’s Otolaryngology Team (Ears, Nose and Throat Services) to hopefully address these issues before school started.

From the most common ear, nose and throat disorders to complex problems that require unique expertise, the ENT Team at Nationwide Children’s is specially trained to treat kids, and only kids. Annually, they see more than 20,000 patient visits and perform over 6,000 surgical procedures.

Dr. Prashant Malhotra determined the obstruction to Allie’s breathing was being caused by her enlarged tonsils and adenoids, which needed to be surgically removed.

A nurse herself at Nationwide Children’s, Lyndsey was well-aware of the risks of surgery. But, all of her worries were put at ease.

“Dr. Malhotra was extremely friendly and confident in his diagnosis. Our experience with surgery was phenomenal. We had complete confidence having Allie in his care. We were given a personal tour by a child life specialist the night before surgery, and it was incredible. The very friendly tour guide brought Allie a bear with an IV attached and took her by the hand to show her around. She made the tour fun and put us all at ease. We appreciated that service so much! Allie was actually excited to come in the next morning for surgery,” says Lyndsey.

Allie’s surgery didn’t take long, and she stayed inpatient for just one night in what her mom describes as “a beautiful room.” Allie recovered quickly and is thriving today.

“Nationwide Children’s is the best pediatric care for all the kids in the central Ohio area. The staff truly love the kids and accommodate the parents’ needs as well. It’s a place we can trust. It is a blessing to have Nationwide Children’s so close to home!” says Lyndsay.

An exuberant, lively girl, Allie loves to do it all – whether it be soccer, swimming, art, music, dancing, or gymnastics. Allie and her family are very involved with their church and Allie prays often for all of the children in the hospital during night time prayers. She can be found most days playing with her little sister Brielle and her dog Gus, as well as all of her friends in Grove City. She enjoys traveling to Dayton and Texas to visit family.”

When asked why she is excited to be a patient champion for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon, Allie said “because I like to help other kids who are sick.”
