Our Ebstein’s Baby

This was my third pregnancy and I was going to the county hospital every week to get stress tests done. I thought everything was going good. I was induced into labor on Friday July 17, 2015. My baby girl was born at 4:45pm. The nurses were checking her out and getting her all cleaned up, when the nurse who was listening to her heat, asked the doctor to come over and listen. They said they heard a murmur, and took her away to the nursery. I didn’t know what was going on. A few minutes later the doctor came back in and told me she was being transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, she had something wrong with her heart. I got wheeled over to the nursery and had to say goodbye to my sweet little girl, she was hooked up to oxygen and a bunch of wires, it broke my heart. I got released the next day and went to see our little Makenzie Jane, and the doctors explained to us she has a rare heart defect called Ebstein’s Anomaly, where her tricuspid valve is deformed and was letting blood back flow into the right atrium. My husband and I spent the first week and a half of her life at the hospital with her, we thought she was going to need surgery but the medicine they used seemed to help, now she goes to see her cardiologist every 6 months and seems to be doing ok with it. I know the day is going to come when she will need to have surgery to have her valve fixed, I’m just hoping it’s not too soon. The staff at Children’s Hospital was amazing, they took such good care of our baby and they helped explain everything and answered our questions. I’m grateful for them!
