Emma’s Story

It was just another ordinary day. Five-year-old Emma and her cousin were having fun playing in the basement. Then, her cousin came running up the stairs saying that Emma needed help right away.

Emma and her cousin were playing on a treadmill when Emma’s dress got caught in the treadmill while it was running at top speed. She was thrown back and pinned between the treadmill and the wall. When Emma’s aunt was able to free her and her parents assessed the injuries, they realized just how seriously she’d been hurt. Emma sustained multiple skin abrasions and third-degree burns from her shoulder down to her hip.

“I will never forget this moment, as I knew I had to keep calm for her, but inside my mind was racing, my heart was beating uncontrollably and my stomach sank as I knew that it would take more than just a Band-Aid to fix her,” says Emma’s mom Kathy.

Ultimately, Emma needed skin grafting to help heal some of her burns.

“The Burn Team was absolutely amazing and helped ease our fears. Nationwide Children’s Hospital is more than just medicine. It is hope and love and healing wrapped up in the compassionate hearts of every single employee. From the moment we came in, we were treated with kindness and respect in every instance. During the scariest of times the staff helped to calm our fears,” says Kathy.

The Burn Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care to children with burn injuries and cutaneous conditions. Annually, it hosts the Healthy Healing Burn Camp and welcomes burn survivors and their families who have been treated in the center to come together to share their support and unique experiences. Emma and her family attended their first burn camp last summer and made some wonderful connections.

“Emma was so brave through all of this and even though she will always have scars, her fighting spirit and beautiful soul helped to heal all of us along the way. She has learned more about bravery and perseverance than anyone should at her age,” says Kathy.
