Back on the Field

When Patrick suffered his second concussion in 6 months, we worried his soccer career had come to a premature end; and right before his Senior season. We initially thought the concussion was not too serious and Patrick would be back on the field in a few weeks. The Team trainer, Liz Horton, was at practice everyday and continued to check Patrick’s symptoms. As school started back up, the pressure of classes began to result in more symptoms. She suggested Patrick might benefit from seeing a Neuropsychologist who could help him manage the stress of athletics and classes. We were able to meet with Dr. Jillian O’Neill within a few days. Patrick felt very comfortable with Dr. O’Neill and was able to openly discuss issues with her. She was able to work with Patrick and teach him coping techniques that he is still using today. Within three weeks, he was back on the field captaining his team. Without Liz being totally involved in his care and follow up, he might not have been able to return to play.
