Asher’s Story

Before Asher was even born, his family was planning for the medical care he would need when he arrived. Prenatal tests revealed that Asher had unilateral Cleft Lip & Palate, so his parents met with the team of experts at Nationwide Children’s Hospital to prepare for his birth and surgeries.

Children with cleft lip and palate have many needs related to nutrition, dentistry, speech, and more, including surgical repair. Asher’s first surgery was when he was only 3 months old.

“It’s hard to hand your infant over, but we had complete faith in Dr. Richard E. Kirschner and his team. We have been through a total of three surgeries at Nationwide Children’s Hospital so far to repair Asher’s cleft lip and palate. We have future surgeries in the upcoming years and yearly visits at Nationwide Children’s, but Asher is active and healthy!” says Asher’s mom, Stacy.

Under Dr. Richard E. Kirschner’s direction, the Cleft Lip and Palate Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital believes that life-altering surgery is not enough. Their goal is to care for the whole child, while also addressing the needs of the family. The Center offers comprehensive care from a multi-disciplinary team of nationally recognized clinicians including plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodonticsotolaryngology (ENT)speech – language pathology, nursing, dentistry, social work, audiologygenetics, and psychology.

“We are so fortunate to have Nationwide Children’s in our ‘backyard.’ We are so lucky Asher is in such great hands with Dr. Kirschner and his team. Because of the caring that comes from our team, I have signed up to be a mentor through the mentorship program to support other cleft parents,” adds Stacy.

Today, Asher is not only a big fan of Dr. Kirschner, he also loves Disney – in particular Mickey Mouse and Olaf from Frozen.
