On August 10 this funny, thoughtful boy was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma. Through all the chemo and the surgery and the scan and tests and labs, he has been so, so brave. He’s peppered the doctors with questions, clung to his family and faced each new challenge with clear eyes and trusting heart.

Star Wars has been there for him the whole way, the movies playing over the sounds of the MRI, the LEGO sets taking his mind off the chemo and his team of “Mateo’s Jedi Warriors” surrounding him and holding him up as he battles the darkness. Every person at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, from our Oncologist to the smiling faces who clean his room, has been a hero to him and to us. To all of the incredible staff: The force will be with you. Always.
