When Laurel was 19 weeks pregnant, the biggest question on her, and her husband, Donald’s, minds was whether they were having a boy or a girl. But that all changed when a routine ultrasound revealed that their baby had a heart condition. Then the only thing that mattered was that their baby live.

Only four days later, Dr. Karen M. Texter at Nationwide Children’s Hospital Heart Center confirmed their baby’s diagnosis hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Even though the news was frightening, Dr. Texter gave this new family hope and encouragement.

“Now, almost six years later and after three open heart surgeries, two heart catheters and countless echocardiograms, electrocardiograms, and doctor appointments we have a beautiful “healthy” vibrant little boy. He’s full of life and we are so grateful to live so close to such an amazing hospital like Nationwide Children’s Hospital,” says Laurel.

And their boy, Owen, is keeping them busy. He is funny, smart and full of energy. He loves anything superhero, especially Spiderman, and he loves playing outside, riding his bike, digging in the dirt and swimming.
