Owen’s Story

When Laurel was 19 weeks pregnant, the biggest question on her, and her husband, Donald’s, minds was whether they were having a boy or a girl. But that all changed when a routine ultrasound revealed that their baby had a heart condition. Then the only thing that mattered was that their baby live.

Only four days later, Dr. Karen M. Texter at Nationwide Children’s Hospital Heart Center confirmed their baby’s diagnosis hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Even though the news was frightening, Dr. Texter gave this new family hope and encouragement.

“Now, almost six years later and after three open heart surgeries, two heart catheters and countless echocardiograms, electrocardiograms, and doctor appointments we have a beautiful “healthy” vibrant little boy. He’s full of life and we are so grateful to live so close to such an amazing hospital like Nationwide Children’s Hospital,” says Laurel.

The Heart Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital provides pediatric and adult heart patients with outstanding diagnostic, treatment and research facilities. At Nationwide Children’s Hospital, patients and families experience innovation and advancements unlike any other institution. The Heart Center consolidates all cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery services into a comprehensive model for family-centered care and convenience. The Center is one comprehensive location for care, education and research. We are prepared to treat patients from 0 to 100 years of age with experts in all areas of surgical and medical subspecialties.

When asked what Nationwide Children’s and its Heart Center mean to her, Laurel responded, “Nationwide Children’s means life, hope, healing and family. They have taken care of our family as a whole not just the patient. We owe Nationwide Children’s everything, without the great staff at the Heart Center… we wouldn’t have our boy here with us.”

And their boy, Owen, is keeping them busy. He is funny, smart and full of energy. He loves anything superhero, especially Spiderman, and he loves playing outside, riding his bike, digging in the dirt and swimming.
